Exercises heal broken joints

Večernji list, February 2005.

Exercises heal broken ankles

Because of the ice wich chained not only the continent but also the Adriatic coast, most of our citizens searched for medical help. Spreading or breaking of ankles, wrists, shoulders… are the most common injuries after falling on ice. Most of the patients end up in casts for 4-6 weeks or with surgery. But that is not all, rehabilitation lasts 4-6 more weeks. It’s purpose is to retrain motion after beeing in one position.
You should exercise moderately, step by step and under control. The duration of rehabilitation depends on complexity of the broken part, and on the fact wether the surgery was performed or not. If it was performed, physical therapy starts earlier.

"Exercises help ankles to gain complete movements wich includes muscles, ligaments, bones but sudden movements should be avoided. Inappropriate exercising according to the phase of recovery results with another breaking or oedema", says Tonći Šitić, physiotherapist.

"The success of rehabilitation and duration depends on the age of the patient. Older people suffer from osteoporosis, they have problems with blood pressure, and othere diseases, so acute trauma additionally deteriorates their health condition. Nowdays, even older people recover successfully thaks to therapy", says dr. Ivan Cvjetko from "Clinic for traumatology" in Zagreb.

Each physician will recommend his patient more movement and exercises because long time spent in cast results with less ancle function, atrophy of the surrounding muscles and slowing of circulation. Physiotherapist Tonći Šitić suggests some exercises that every person can practise at home when his cast is off.
